A waterjet cutting machine mainly comprises of a high pressure pump and a CNC cutting platform. Both types of components are available in a great number of varieties, and they can be freely combined.
While selecting the high pressure pumps, customers have to take the following factors into consideration:

1. Cutting purpose
The high pressure pump is the core part of a waterjet cutter, and it is typically selected according to the cutting purpose.
For cutting of soft or low density materials
A small horsepower pump (15-30hp) with pressure within 350Mpa is competent, if the waterjet cutting machine is mainly used to cut soft, low density materials, such as the sponge, common foam, EPE foam, polystyrene foam, paperboard, soft rubber offset plate, and more materials which can be cut by pure waterjet only.

Usually, water-only cutting requires a waterjet nozzle with very small diameter between 0.10mm and 0.15mm. Pure waterjet cutting machines can be equipped with multiple cutting heads to increase cutting efficiency, and maximally over 10 cutting heads can be utilized synchronously according to the cutting platform size and workpiece size. Hence, clients can select a proper high pressure pump model in accordance with the total flow of all cutting heads, which will reduce the acquisition cost (because pumps with larger flow costs higher) and will also save operating cost (because lower capacity pump is more energy efficient).

For cutting of hard or high density materials
A high horsepower pump is necessary, if the water jet cutter is mainly used for cutting hard, or large density materials, such as the ceramic, artificial stone, marble, granite, glass, organic glass, acrylic, quartz glass, plastic board, rubber, bakelite plate, aluminum plate, metal plate, stainless steel, tool steel, copper plate, titanium plate, and even hard alloy materials.
In order to ensure large cutting force, abrasives are required during the cutting process. During the abrasive waterjet cutting, the high pressure water flow functions to carry the abrasive, and larger flow ensures higher abrasive carrying capacity. Therefore, a high horsepower pump has to be adopted to achieve high cutting force.

We know from experience that the optimum waterjet nozzle diameter and mixing tube diameter of a single cutting head is 0.36mm (0.014") and 1.02mm (0.04") respectively. This configuration provides the cutting equipment with a cutting efficiency comparable with that of machines from international leading manufacturers.
Typically, a high pressure pump supporting 0.36mm nozzle and maximally 380Mpa working pressure requires 40 to 50 horsepower at least, and thus a 40-50hp pump has become a standard configuration for single-cutting head abrasive cutting machines. Similarly, a 75~100hp high pressure pump should be adopted for abrasive waterjet cutters requiring two cutting heads, and a 150~200hp pump for cutters requiring four cutting heads.

2. Intensifier
While choosing a high pressure pump, clients have to consider the replaceability of the intensifier parts. Easy accessibility to replacement parts can effectively reduce downtime and ensure easy pump maintenance.

3. Accumulator
A good high pressure pump should be equipped with a maintenance free accumulator with sufficient capacity, so as to ensure stable pressure output.

4. Hydraulic system
A variable displacement hydraulic oil pump is usually more durable, and contributes to better quality of high pressure pumps.

5. Protection functions

6. Dual-pressure system
A double-pressure system is necessary for cutting fragile materials such as glass. It should be able to perform low pressure piercing and high pressure cutting so as to ensure that a workpiece is cut through without damage and simultaneously improve the cutting efficiency.
